Madelyn Eitas, Rochester, Mass Student, Dies in Out-of-Bounds Ski Avalanche in Utah

 A tragic skiing accident has claimed the life of 11-year-old Madelyn Eitas from Rochester, Massachusetts, after she was caught in an avalanche near Brighton Ski Resort, Utah. The incident occurred just after 12:30 p.m. on Thursday in the Rock Garden area, an out-of-bounds zone outside the resort’s cleared and cordoned terrain, where Madelyn had been skiing with her family during the school vacation week. Authorities confirmed that despite immediate rescue efforts, Madelyn succumbed to her injuries at a nearby hospital.

Following the avalanche, approximately 20 people, including family members, attempted to free Madelyn from the snow. Brighton Ski Patrol and Wasatch Backcountry Rescue, alongside Salt Lake County sheriff’s search-and-rescue teams, arrived at the scene to assist. Despite first aid and rapid transport to the hospital, Madelyn’s condition was critical, and she later passed away. Police noted that she was not carrying an avalanche beacon, a device that can significantly aid rescuers in locating buried victims.

In a heroic act, Madelyn’s brother, Cameron, used an application to help pinpoint her location in the aftermath of the slide, highlighting the quick-thinking actions that assisted rescue teams in reaching her. Authorities described the event as a devastating accident and expressed their condolences to the family, noting the importance of community support in times of tragedy.

The Unified Police Department of Utah emphasized the responsibility of both local and home communities to provide care, compassion, and comfort for Madelyn’s loved ones during this difficult time.
