The Lansing, Michigan community is grieving the loss of Amy Cathleen Hartley, who passed away peacefully on February 24, 2026, at the age of 49, surrounded by the love of her family. Born on July 4, 1976, in Adrian, Michigan, Amy was the cherished daughter of John and Cathy (Commenator) Hartley. Her passing marks the end of a life devoted to education, faith, and family — a life that quietly but powerfully shaped countless students and colleagues across southern Michigan. Those who knew Amy describe her as compassionate, thoughtful, and deeply committed to helping others grow.
Amy dedicated more than two decades to education, first serving at Union City Community Schools before spending 23 years at Jonesville High School. In the classroom, she inspired students through her love of mathematics, breaking down complex concepts with patience and clarity. Later, as a school counselor, she became a trusted guide for young people navigating academic pressures and life decisions. A proud graduate of Hudson Area High School, Adrian College, and Siena Heights University, Amy earned both her Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics and her Master of Arts in Guidance and School Counseling. Her academic journey reflected the same discipline and perseverance she instilled in her students.
Beyond her formal responsibilities, Amy invested deeply in her school communities. She volunteered for numerous activities, supported yearbook production, served on committees, and held the role of JEA Treasurer. Colleagues remember her as someone who stepped forward without hesitation when help was needed. Students often found in her not just an educator, but an advocate — someone who listened carefully, offered steady encouragement, and believed in their potential even when they doubted themselves. Her legacy lives on in the lives she quietly helped shape over the years.
Outside of school, Amy’s personality shone through her many interests. She was an avid reader and a talented crafter who found joy in creative expression. A devoted fan of the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, she rarely missed an opportunity to cheer on her team. Christmas was especially dear to her heart; she filled her home with decorations, baked seasonal treats, and proudly collected Dayton Hudson Santa Bears. The warmth she created during the holidays reflected the warmth she carried year-round — welcoming, generous, and full of spirit.
Amy is survived by her mother, Cathy; her brother, Daniel (Alyssa) Hartley; her sister, Sarah Hartley; and her beloved nieces and nephews, Eli, Holly, Luke, and Trinity. She was preceded in death by her father, grandparents, and other cherished relatives. Her family describes her as a steady presence — a loving daughter and sister whose loyalty and quiet strength formed the foundation of so many family memories.
