A tragic accident in Fresno has claimed the life of a 16‑year‑old Justin Garza High School student who was struck by a pickup truck while attempting to cross Highway 99. The Fresno County Coroner’s Office identified the victim as Maxwell Thompson, who died at the scene despite life‑saving efforts by emergency personnel.
California Highway Patrol officers reported that the crash occurred just before 9 a.m. on February 5, south of Herndon Avenue. Investigators say Thompson ran from the east shoulder across the northbound lanes toward the center divider when a Toyota Tacoma traveling in the far‑right lane struck him. The impact propelled Thompson back onto the shoulder, where responders attempted CPR and other measures, but he could not be revived.
Authorities confirmed that the driver of the pickup remained at the scene and cooperated fully with investigators. CHP emphasized that alcohol and drugs were not factors in the collision. The incident is being treated as a tragic accident, underscoring the dangers pedestrians face on high‑speed freeways.
“This is an incredibly tragic loss, especially involving someone so young,” CHP Fresno Area Commander Capt. Ian Holguin said in a statement. He explained that freeways are designed for fast‑moving vehicles, leaving drivers with little time to react to unexpected hazards. Pedestrians who attempt to cross such roadways are at extreme risk, as drivers cannot anticipate sudden movements across multiple lanes.
The death of a teenager has left the Fresno community heartbroken, particularly at Justin Garza High School, where classmates and teachers are mourning the sudden loss. Friends described Thompson as a bright and energetic student whose future was cut short in an instant.
As investigators continue to review the circumstances, officials are reminding the public that freeways are not safe for pedestrian crossings. The tragedy serves as a painful reminder of the importance of roadway safety and the devastating consequences when those rules are broken.
