A tragic multivehicle crash on Interstate 75 South in Bibb County claimed the lives of a 61-year-old woman and her 1-year-old grandson Wednesday afternoon, leaving the community in shock and mourning.
According to the Georgia State Patrol, the collision occurred around 4:33 p.m. near mile marker 153 at Sardis Church Road. Officials said a Ford F-350 commercial truck struck a Toyota Corolla from behind in the left lane. The impact caused the Corolla to collide with a Ford F-150, which in turn hit a Chevrolet van, resulting in a chain-reaction crash involving all four vehicles.
Bibb County Deputy Coroner Luann Stone identified the deceased as Joann White, 61, the driver of the Toyota, and Zion Thomas, a 1-year-old passenger and White’s grandson, who would have turned two on April 22. Both were pronounced dead at the scene. The victims were residents of Warner Robins, Georgia.
Three other individuals were injured in the crash and transported to Atrium Health Navicent for treatment, including a passenger from the Toyota, the driver of the F-150, and a passenger from the F-350. Authorities have not released details on the extent of their injuries.
The Georgia State Patrol Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team is investigating the circumstances of the accident to determine contributing factors and the sequence of events that led to the fatalities.
The crash caused major traffic disruptions, blocking three left lanes of I-75 South for several hours. Clearance was reported around 10:30 p.m., according to the Georgia Department of Transportation.
Community members have expressed condolences for the loss of Joann White and young Zion Thomas, remembering the devastating impact such sudden accidents have on families and neighbors. Authorities are urging drivers to exercise caution and remain attentive on highways, especially in heavy traffic areas.
