Authorities are actively investigating a fatal early-morning assault in Wharton that has resulted in a murder charge and left one man dead.
According to the Wharton Police Department, officers were dispatched at approximately 3:03 a.m. Thursday to a reported assault at 1510 Martin Luther King Blvd. When police arrived around 3:08 a.m., they were met by Quinton Jubbar Farris, 51, who directed officers to a man lying in a grassy area near his residence.
The victim was identified as 53-year-old Jerald Jermaine Jackson. Officers found Jackson unresponsive and bleeding. Police immediately began administering first aid while awaiting the arrival of Wharton EMS. Despite emergency efforts, Jackson showed no signs of life upon EMS evaluation.
Justice of the Peace JP-4 Drapela conducted an inquest at the scene and officially pronounced Jackson deceased at 5:26 a.m. Authorities have confirmed that an autopsy is pending to determine the exact cause and manner of death.
Preliminary findings from investigators indicate that Jackson and Farris were involved in a physical altercation that escalated into violence. During the confrontation, Jackson was reportedly stabbed. Police detained Farris at the scene without incident. He was later transported to the Wharton County Jail, where he was booked on a charge of murder.
Detectives remained at the scene for several hours, collecting evidence and interviewing witnesses to piece together the sequence of events leading up to the fatal stabbing. Authorities have not yet released further details regarding what may have prompted the altercation.
