Christian County, Missouri, is mourning the deaths of two deputies, Gabriel Ramirez and Michael Hislope, who were killed in a deadly shooting following a traffic stop on Monday. The incident began south of Highlandville on State Highway 160 when 30-year-old Deputy Ramirez, who had joined the department in March 2025, was fatally shot during a routine traffic stop. The suspect, 45-year-old Richard Dean Bird, fled the scene in a white 2001 Chevrolet Silverado, prompting a Blue Alert and a coordinated multi-agency search.
Hours later, law enforcement located Bird near Reeds Spring in Stone County, where he engaged officers in another violent confrontation. During the exchange, 40-year-old Deputy Hislope, a veteran officer since October 2019 and former U.S. Army servicemember, was fatally shot. Two additional deputies—one from Christian County and one from Webster County—sustained non-life-threatening injuries. Authorities returned fire, killing Bird during the shootout.
Sheriff Brad Cole described the day as “trying” and expressed profound sorrow over the loss of his deputies. “It’s with the heaviest of hearts that we mourn the loss of two of our own,” he stated, acknowledging their dedication and service to the community. The deaths prompted condolences from law enforcement agencies across the region, emphasizing the devastating impact on both the Christian County Sheriff’s Office and the wider law enforcement community.
Investigators noted that Bird had a criminal history, including a 2016 Kansas conviction for shooting at a deputy and recent burglary charges in Missouri. Authorities continue to review the circumstances surrounding the incident, including the suspect’s prior criminal activity and the sequence of events leading up to both shootings.
Community members and colleagues of Deputies Ramirez and Hislope have shared tributes highlighting their commitment, bravery, and the lives they touched through service. Ramirez, though relatively new to the force, was described as dedicated and eager to protect the community, while Hislope’s years of experience and military background underscored his dedication to duty.
The Christian County Sheriff’s Office and partner agencies continue their investigation, working to gather evidence, witness accounts, and forensic information. In the wake of this tragedy, local officials have reminded residents to support law enforcement families affected by the loss and to honor the service of those who risk their lives daily to protect communities.
