According to the Georgia State Patrol, the incident occurred around 12:09 a.m. while Officer Abney was conducting a traffic stop. He had pulled over a Nissan and was seated in his marked patrol car with emergency lights activated when a Chevrolet Camaro veered into the shoulder and struck the rear of his vehicle. The impact pushed Abney’s patrol car into the Nissan, sending all three vehicles off the highway.
Emergency responders pronounced Officer Abney dead at the scene. The driver of the Camaro was transported to South Georgia Medical Center but later died from their injuries.
