Fatal Accident Claims Life of Hahira Police Officer During Early Morning Traffic Stop

 The Hahira, Georgia community is mourning the tragic death of Officer Caleb Abney, who lost his life early Thursday morning in a devastating crash on northbound Interstate 75 in Lowndes County.

According to the Georgia State Patrol, the incident occurred around 12:09 a.m. while Officer Abney was conducting a traffic stop. He had pulled over a Nissan and was seated in his marked patrol car with emergency lights activated when a Chevrolet Camaro veered into the shoulder and struck the rear of his vehicle. The impact pushed Abney’s patrol car into the Nissan, sending all three vehicles off the highway.

Emergency responders pronounced Officer Abney dead at the scene. The driver of the Camaro was transported to South Georgia Medical Center but later died from their injuries.

The Georgia State Patrol’s Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team is leading the investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash. Authorities have confirmed that Officer Abney’s family has been notified.
