The Grand Rapids community is mourning after Da-Quain Johnson, a 29-year-old man, died Thursday morning following a police-involved shooting the previous night.
According to authorities, the incident began around 9:30 p.m. near M.L.K. Jr. Street and Eastern Avenue, when officers responded to reports of a man riding a bicycle who may have been armed. Police say Johnson fled on his bike, leading officers to a parking lot behind a nearby apartment complex. A police canine was deployed, and Johnson reportedly continued resisting officers.
Deputy Police Chief Joseph Trigg stated that Johnson produced a handgun during the encounter, prompting one officer to discharge their weapon. Johnson was struck by at least one bullet and transported to a local hospital, where he later died. It remains unclear whether Johnson fired any shots during the incident.
The officers involved have been placed on administrative leave while the Michigan State Police conduct an independent investigation. Community members have expressed grief and concern as authorities review the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
