Georgia assistant principal Courtney Janell Shaw charged with felony shoplifting after allegedly stealing 98 items worth nearly $1,000 from Walmart us
WOODSTOCK, GA — A veteran Georgia educator is facing felony charges after authorities say she carried out a months‑long shoplifting scheme at a Walmart using self‑checkout kiosks.
According to the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office, Courtney Janell Shaw, 47, an assistant principal at Free Home Elementary School, allegedly stole 98 items valued at $943.97 between November and December. Investigators say Shaw employed a “stacking” method, placing multiple items on top of one another and scanning only the top item before leaving the store undetected.
The case came to light after a Walmart employee provided surveillance footage to authorities on January 12, later identifying Shaw through a driver’s license database. Detectives also linked two vehicles seen in the footage — a 2018 Ford F‑150 and a 2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee — to Shaw’s residence, further tying her to the alleged thefts.
Shaw was arrested Monday and booked into the Cherokee County Jail on one felony count of shoplifting. She was released later the same day on a $4,875 bond.
School district officials confirmed Shaw has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of both law enforcement and internal investigations. A mother of one, Shaw’s career spans more than two decades, including leadership roles at two other elementary schools. She had previously been praised on the district’s website for bringing “a wealth of experience and dedication” to her role.
The allegations have drawn widespread attention, not only because of the value of the stolen merchandise but also due to the stark contrast between Shaw’s professional reputation and the accusations now facing her. Community members expressed shock that a longtime educator entrusted with shaping young minds could be implicated in such a scheme.
As the investigation continues, questions remain about how long the alleged thefts went undetected and what consequences Shaw may face beyond the criminal charges. For now, the case underscores the importance of accountability, even among those in positions of trust and leadership.
