Conan O’Brien has spoken publicly for the first time about the tragic deaths of Rob and Michele Reiner, opening up about the shocking loss in an interview released Friday with The New Yorker. The late director and his wife had become close friends of O’Brien and his wife over the years, and learning of their deaths just hours after a farewell visit left him in deep shock.
O’Brien remembered the Reiners as “lovely people” and praised Rob Reiner’s extraordinary career, noting that while “Spinal Tap” alone would have cemented his legacy, his string of acclaimed films through the 1980s and ’90s made his accomplishments even more remarkable.
The interview also touched on the horrific circumstances surrounding their passing. Rob and Michele Reiner, along with their son Nick Reiner, had attended a Christmas party at O’Brien’s home hours before the fatal incident. During the gathering, Rob and Nick reportedly had a loud argument. Nick Reiner has since been arrested in connection with the murders and is expected to be arraigned on Monday. Investigators and O’Brien have highlighted that a recent change in Nick’s schizoaffective disorder medication may have played a role in the tragic events.
O’Brien’s reflections went beyond the Reiners, as he also shared his grief over the passing of comic actress Catherine O’Hara last month from cancer, describing her as “straight-up perfection.”
Through his interview, O’Brien conveyed both his admiration for Rob Reiner’s professional achievements and the personal sorrow of losing close friends in such a sudden and violent way, highlighting the profound impact the Reiners had on those around them.
