The Columbia, Missouri community is mourning the tragic loss of Michael Ryan Burke, a 42-year-old Marine veteran, who was fatally shot at his home on January 18, 2026. What began as a routine Facebook Marketplace transaction for an iPhone turned into a deadly robbery, cutting short the life of a man celebrated for his courage, compassion, and service.
In his final moments, Burke bravely called 911 to provide details about the suspects and sent a heartbreaking message to his family, telling his mother, Erlinda Burke, and sister, Maria Werly, “I’m dying and I love you.” His calm presence and concern for others even during those last moments reflected a lifetime dedicated to service.
Burke was a graduate of the University of Missouri, earning degrees in psychology and sociology. He served as a Force Reconnaissance Staff Sergeant in the United States Marine Corps, gaining combat experience that shaped his lifelong commitment to helping others. Following his military service, he continued to dedicate himself to public service as a firefighter for the City of Columbia and as a pastor, offering guidance and support to his community.
Beyond his local contributions, Burke’s humanitarian work took him across the globe. He participated in missionary efforts in Uganda, Haiti, and Iraq, and worked on initiatives combating human trafficking. Friends and colleagues consistently describe him as selfless and driven by a deep sense of responsibility to protect and uplift those around him.
Jerry Reifeiss, Burke’s longtime friend and fraternity brother, reflected on his character: “That was just Ryan. He always put people in front of him and wanted to make sure people knew how he felt.” These words encapsulate a man whose life was defined not by accolades, but by the lives he touched, the compassion he shared, and the courage he embodied.
Michael Ryan Burke leaves behind a legacy of bravery, faith, and humanitarianism. His life reminds us of the profound impact one individual can have through service, love, and selflessness. Friends, family, and the Columbia community honor his memory and mourn the loss of a true hero.
Let us remember Michael’s name and his extraordinary life. Rest in peace, Marine.
