The Christian County, Missouri community is reeling after the tragic death of Deputy Gabriel Ramirez, who was fatally shot Monday afternoon during a routine traffic stop. The incident occurred near the intersection of U.S. Highway 160 and Route HH in Highlandville around 4 p.m., according to Brad Cole. Ramirez’s death has prompted a statewide Blue Alert and an urgent manhunt for the suspect, highlighting the dangers law enforcement officers face daily.
Authorities identified the suspect as 44-year-old Richard Dean Bird, who remains at large and is considered armed and dangerous. Law enforcement is asking the public not to approach Bird and to contact 911 immediately if he is spotted. The suspect was linked to a white 2001 Chevrolet Silverado extended cab pickup, featuring a silver brush guard, rusted roof, black body trim, tinted rear windows, and a three-ball hitch. The vehicle was located later Monday evening in Reeds Springs, Stone County, but Bird evaded capture.
Records indicate Bird has a criminal history, including a 2014 charge of attempted murder against a Johnson County deputy during a burglary investigation, as well as recent arrests in Stone County. These past offenses underscore the potential threat he poses to both law enforcement and the public during this ongoing manhunt. Stone County deputies are assisting Christian County authorities in the search, coordinating roadblocks and canvassing rural areas in southwestern Missouri.
Deputy Ramirez’s passing has left a profound void in the Christian County Sheriff’s Office. Colleagues described him as a dedicated officer committed to protecting the community, with a strong work ethic and compassionate approach to public service. His death serves as a somber reminder of the risks law enforcement personnel face while carrying out their duties.
Local and state officials have urged residents to exercise caution and remain vigilant while the search continues. Law enforcement agencies across Missouri are working collaboratively, employing ground units, aerial support, and investigative resources to apprehend Bird safely. Public safety remains a top priority as authorities pursue leads and review evidence from the scene of the shooting.
The tragedy has drawn widespread attention throughout Missouri, with community members expressing condolences and support for Ramirez’s family and colleagues. Vigils and memorial efforts are anticipated as residents honor the life and service of a man who dedicated himself to keeping others safe. The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the line-of-duty shooting remains ongoing.
