According to his family, Nathan Pigg, a dedicated public servant, coach, and family man, passed quietly in his sleep early Tuesday morning, February 4, and the Bethel Grade School District as well as the Mount Vernon neighborhood are grieving his loss.
Students, athletes, coworkers, and loved ones all throughout the community have been profoundly touched by Nathan's untimely death. Bethel Grade School District 82 verified his death in a statement and offered sincere sympathies, noting the major impact he had on young people's lives.
“We are heartbroken to learn of a great loss to the Bethel family," the district wrote. This morning passed away Nathan Pigg, board member and basketball coach. This will absolutely affect his players and our pupils. Should any of our pupils require someone to speak with, grief counselors will be present at school tomorrow. Once they become available, we will disclose funeral plans. We pray his loved ones
Nathan's dedication to mentorship and charity was greatly appreciated. He was well-known as a basketball coach and school board member for motivating students to believe in themselves, put in effort, and support one other. His impact on the young people he mentored went well beyond the courtroom to help them grow in confidence and character.
Nathan committed himself throughout his career to helping the Mount Vernon region. He formerly served as the City of Mount Vernon Building Inspector and as Jefferson County Animal Warden; in these capacities he was praised for his fairness, compassion, and sense of obligation.
A proud Mount Vernon native, Nathan graduated from Mt. Vernon Township High School and enrolled at Rend Lake College. He was first of all a doting grandfather, a devoted father, and a loving spouse to Alecia Pigg. Those near him recall his unwavering family devotion, kind heart, and constant presence.
The Pigg family has received a torrent of love and encouragement as the neighborhood gathers in mourning. Students will have access to grief counselors; funeral arrangements will be made public when final.
