3-Year-Old Kentre Baker Fatally Shot During Las Vegas Police Hostage Standoff

LAS VEGAS, NV — A tragic hostage situation early Tuesday morning ended with the deaths of Quinton Baker and his 3‑year‑old son, Kentre Baker, after a confrontation with the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD) at an apartment complex near South Maryland Parkway and Wigwam Avenue.

According to Capt. Ryan Wiggins, officers responded at 1:19 a.m. to reports of a man battering a woman and attempting to take a child from a residence at the Parkside Villas Apartment Homes. When police arrived, Baker, described as armed, had taken his son hostage inside the apartment.

Authorities said Baker later exited the residence holding the child at gunpoint and began approaching officers. Despite repeated commands to drop his weapon, he refused. LVMPD officers opened fire, striking Baker, while Baker simultaneously discharged his firearm, fatally wounding his son.

“The suspect approached the officers still holding the juvenile hostage, causing our officers to discharge their firearms, striking the suspect,” Wiggins explained. “Simultaneously, the suspect, while pointing his firearm in the direction of the juvenile, discharged his firearm.”

Medical crews rushed to provide aid to the child and transported him to a nearby hospital, but he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. Baker was declared dead at the scene.

No officers were injured in the incident, which marks the third officer‑involved shooting for LVMPD in 2026. The child’s mother later identified him publicly as 3‑year‑old Kentre, describing him as a beloved son whose life was cut short in unimaginable circumstances.

The case has left the Las Vegas community shaken, with residents expressing grief and outrage over the loss of such a young life. Domestic violence advocates emphasized the dangers posed when family disputes escalate into armed confrontations, noting the need for continued support systems to protect vulnerable children and families.

Investigators are continuing to review body‑worn camera footage, witness statements, and forensic evidence to piece together the full timeline of events. LVMPD officials stressed that the department’s priority was to protect the child, but the suspect’s actions created a deadly and volatile situation.

Community leaders have called for compassion and support for the child’s mother and family as they navigate the devastating aftermath. Vigils are expected in the coming days to honor Kentre’s memory and provide space for collective mourning.
