The Merced community is mourning the terrible loss of two 14-year-old boys, Xavier Barragan and Nehemiah Green, shot on East 13th Street near the Merced Behavioral Center on Monday night.
Reports of gunfire around 7 p.m. on January 19 led Merced police to arrive to find two teenagers unconscious at the scene.Though emergency response attempts were made, Xavier and Nehemiah were declared dead, therefore bringing the second and third homicides in the city this year among a disturbing spike in gun violence.
Officials say the gunshot does not seem to be connected with gangs.Sgt. Christian Lupian of the Merced Police Department said that detectives are going through many witness statements as well as video surveillance from the neighborhood.One theory now under investigation proposes the boys may have been among three teens reportedly engaged in a failed heist when gunshots erupted hitting two of them.Police say the events still under investigation haven't been confirmed.
As family members, friends, classmates, and community members gather to mourn the tragic loss of two young lives gone far too early, memorials have sprouted at the location of the shooting.Deep grief felt throughout the city is shown in candles, flowers, and letters.
Commissioner Walter Smith of Merced Recreation and Parks denounced the violence as unnecessary and asked for a stop of the continuing slaughter.
