Travis Sneden Fort McCoy Incident: PCSO Traffic Homicide Team Looks Into Devastating ATV Death at Rancho Bonito Park in Lakeland
The Traffic Homicide Unit of the Polk County Sheriff’s Office is conducting an investigation into a heartbreaking ATV accident that resulted in the death of 32-year-old Travis Sneden from Fort McCoy, Florida. This incident took place on Saturday, January 10, 2026, at the Rancho Bonito ATV Park located in Lakeland.
The tragic event unfolded around 3:00 p.m., sending ripples of grief throughout the local off-road community and leaving friends and family devastated by the abrupt loss.
Preliminary details released by officials indicate that Sneden was driving a green 2018 Kawasaki ATV about 1.3 miles south of the main entrance to the park at the time of the crash. Reports from investigators suggest that Sneden was trying to go down a steep incline that had an estimated vertical drop of between 24 to 30 inches.
As the ATV advanced, its front wheels went down first while the back wheels remained elevated, resulting in an unstable position. This precarious balance led to the vehicle overturning, with Sneden becoming trapped underneath it.
Emergency personnel were sent to the location soon after the incident was reported. Despite their attempts to assist, Sneden suffered fatal head trauma and was declared dead at the scene.
Officials have confirmed that he was not wearing a helmet during the accident. There were no other vehicles or persons involved, indicating that this was solely a single-vehicle incident.
The PCSO Traffic Homicide Unit is actively pursuing its investigation to clarify the circumstances surrounding the crash, which includes assessing the terrain, the position of the ATV, and factors related to rider safety.
While the probe continues, authorities have highlighted the inherent dangers of off-road riding, particularly when it comes to steep slopes or sudden changes in elevation. They also reiterated the critical role of safety gear, especially helmets, in reducing the likelihood of serious injuries in such accidents.
Rancho Bonito ATV Park is a favored spot for off-road fans, attracting riders from Central Florida. The park presents an array of trails and obstacles tailored to varied skill levels; however, officials caution that even seasoned riders may face unforeseen dangers. This incident is a grim reminder of how swiftly recreational pursuits can become tragic.
Travis Sneden will be remembered by those close to him as an individual who cherished outdoor adventures and recreation. His unexpected death has elicited a flood of sympathy from friends, family, and the ATV community, many of whom have taken to social media platforms to share cherished memories and encourage fellow riders to prioritize their safety on the trails.
