According to the Martin Police Department, officers and deputies were dispatched to a shots-fired call just before 3 a.m. at the Days Inn on University Street, less than a mile from the UT Martin campus. Police saw a car leaving a gas station across the motel as units arrived.

Investigators allege the driver shot several times while escaping, wounding a Weakley County Sheriff's Office deputy. Taken to a nearby hospital, the deputy passed from their wounds thereafter.

Leading the inquiry is the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI). As the inquiry is still ongoing, authorities have withheld further information about a suspect, reason, or arrests.

Following the catastrophe, law enforcement organizations all around showed sympathy and grief. In a statement issued Friday, the Tennessee Sheriffs' Association (TSA) stated it is grieving the line-of-duty death of Weakley County deputy and described the loss as "tragic and heroic."

"This terrible loss serves as a solemn reminder of the remarkable bravery, selflessness, and unrelenting dedication shown every day by law enforcement officers throughout our state and country," the statement continued. “The deputy's sacrifice embodies the greatest responsibility of public service: putting the well-being of others before one's own.”

The TSA sent their most sincere condolences to Weakley County Sheriff Terry McDade, the men and women of the Weakley County Sheriff's Office, and the deputy's family, friends, and loved ones.

The association stated, "On behalf of Tennessee's 95 sheriffs and the thousands of deputies and detention experts they command, we mourn alongside Sheriff McDade and the Weakley County Sheriff's Office." "No words can completely capture the sorrow felt when a law enforcement officer makes the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty."

Law enforcement leaders stressed that the death of one officer is felt well outside of county borders.

The TSA stated, honoring the brave, dedicated, and community service of the fallen deputy, "Every sheriff's office and every law enforcement organization throughout Tennessee feel the loss of one deputy."

Officials again underlined the intrinsic hazards officers encounter daily.

The statement went on to say that law enforcement officers voluntarily accept the risks of this job to safeguard others, sometimes rushing toward peril while others are obliged to escape. “This deputy's service and sacrifice will always be kept in mind.”

The TSA and law enforcement organizations around the state are urging Tennesseans to keep the deputy's family, Sheriff Terry McDade, and the whole Weakley County Sheriff's Office in their prayers as the inquiry goes on, promising ongoing help during this extremely hard time.
