A quiet Tuesday morning in central Illinois turned tragic when a Riverton woman and her young daughter lost their lives in a devastating crash on Interstate 55 near Springfield. The accident, which occurred in the early hours of the day, has left a grieving family, a shaken school community, and many unanswered questions as authorities continue their investigation.
Illinois State Police said they were called to the scene around 6:40 a.m. at milepost 92 in Sangamon County, near the exit for U.S. Route 36. According to preliminary information, a southbound passenger vehicle struck the rear of a semitruck traveling on the interstate. The impact proved fatal for both occupants of the passenger vehicle, while no other injuries were reported at the scene.
The crash led to the closure of the southbound lanes of I-55 for several hours as emergency crews worked to clear the wreckage and investigators documented evidence. Morning traffic in the area was heavily disrupted as drivers were diverted and authorities worked to ensure safety along the busy stretch of highway.
Sangamon County Coroner Jim Allmon later confirmed that both victims died as a result of blunt force injuries sustained in the collision. Initially, officials withheld the names of the deceased pending notification of family members. Those identities were later confirmed by the North Mac Community Unit School District and a family representative.
The victims were identified as Jennifer Damm, 37, of Riverton, and her 8-year-old daughter, Kendyn Damm, a student at North Mac Intermediate School. News of their deaths sent shockwaves through the local school district and the broader Riverton and North Mac communities, where Kendyn was known as a bright and joyful presence.
In a heartfelt statement, the North Mac Community Unit School District remembered Kendyn as a happy student with many friends and a personality that brought warmth to those around her. The district announced that school counselors would be made available to students and staff in the days following the tragedy to help them process the loss and cope with grief.
“Please keep the Damm family and friends in your thoughts and prayers during this time of grief,” the statement read, reflecting the collective sorrow felt by teachers, classmates, and parents alike. For many students, the loss of a classmate at such a young age is especially difficult to understand, making emotional support a critical focus for the school community.
As of now, Illinois State Police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash. Authorities have not released information regarding the semitruck driver, nor have they detailed whether factors such as speed, road conditions, or weather may have played a role. Investigators are expected to review vehicle data and scene evidence as part of the ongoing probe.
The sudden deaths of Jennifer and Kendyn Damm serve as a heartbreaking reminder of how quickly lives can be changed on the road. As the investigation continues, the community is left mourning a mother and daughter whose lives were cut short far too soon, holding onto memories while offering support to those left behind.
