 Authorities are looking into the passing of Renee Macklin Good, a 37-year-old American, who was shot and killed by an agent from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) during an immigration-focused operation in southern Minneapolis on January 7, 2026. This event has led to significant disagreement between federal authorities and local as well as state officials regarding the circumstances surrounding the shooting.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) stated that the agent discharged his weapon in self-defense, claiming that Good had threatened the safety of officers by trying to use her vehicle as a weapon during the operation. A representative from DHS described the gunfire as "defensive," asserting that the agent acted to ensure his safety and the safety of others nearby.

Local leaders strongly contest this explanation. Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey announced that he has viewed footage of the incident and dismissed the federal narrative, calling for an independent inquiry while also urging ICE to stop its activities in the city. Good was a poet and a mother who raised her children in Colorado Springs. She had been married to a comedian named Timothy Macklin, who passed away in 2023, and currently resides in Minneapolis with her partner, who has not been named.

Good was shot three times in the face during a protest in Minneapolis on Wednesday after she disregarded the orders from ICE agents to exit her vehicle, put it in reverse, and attempted to flee.

Minnesota Governor Tim Walz expressed that the state would guarantee a “complete, impartial, and prompt investigation” to ascertain accountability. Senator Amy Klobuchar, a Democrat from Minnesota, also expressed skepticism regarding the DHS’s narrative, stating that federal claims seem inconsistent with the videos and eyewitness accounts.

Per the Minneapolis police, Good did not seem to be the target of any law enforcement actions. Witnesses recounted a charged atmosphere on Portland Avenue, where a vehicle was halted amid activities linked to the operation. A video shared on social media depicts agents approaching a maroon SUV and instructing the driver to leave the vehicle. Shortly afterward, gunfire erupted, and the vehicle eventually came to a stop after colliding with nearby objects. Authorities reported that Good was taken for medical treatment but succumbed to her injuries.

Good was characterized by her friends and supporters as a writer and poet, a mother and wife, as well as a long-term inhabitant of Colorado who was residing in Minneapolis. Advocacy organizations stated that she was serving as a legal observer during local events connected to federal enforcement activities, a statement that has not been verified by officials.
