A tragedy unfolded in western Wyoming when a 31-year-old man from Utah tragically died in a catastrophic avalanche while snowmobiling in the LaBarge Creek region. Nicholas Bringhurst, who lived in Springville, was traversing a steep, untouched slope above LaBarge Creek with a friend around 2 p.m. when the snow slide took place at roughly 8,800 feet in elevation. This avalanche, rated as D2 on the scale of destructive events, was powerful enough to potentially cover an individual in snow and ended up burying Bringhurst under approximately two feet of snow along with his snowmobile.

Nicholas Bringhurst Utah Accident

As reported by officials from the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office and the Bridger-Teton Avalanche Center, Bringhurst’s friend was unharmed but took quick action in response to the situation. He swiftly found Bringhurst, extricated him from the snow, and started administering CPR. Although Bringhurst was equipped with an avalanche airbag backpack intended to help keep users above the snow and lessen the depth of burial, the device deployed yet ultimately did not prevent him from being completely buried. The strength of the avalanche, combined with the fragile layer of snow located beneath the surface, severely hampered rescue attempts.

Rescue teams were notified through a satellite emergency device, specifically a Garmin inReach, which generated an alert prompting Star Valley Search and Rescue to send a helicopter for the operation. Regrettably, even with the prompt response, rescuers arrived too late to assist Bringhurst, who was declared dead at the scene. The investigation indicates that the avalanche was initiated by a vulnerable layer known as “Christmas crust” within the snowpack, which developed from rainfall during the holidays followed by subsequent snowfall, leading experts to believe this played a role in the snowpack's instability.

The Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office extended their sympathies to Bringhurst’s family and is further probing the incident to pinpoint the exact cause of the avalanche. This heartbreaking event has profoundly impacted the local community and those who were acquainted with Bringhurst, an avid outdoor lover and adventurer.

In response to this sad occurrence, a GoFundMe initiative has been set up to assist Bringhurst’s spouse, Lauren. The couple, whose relationship flourished due to their mutual love for the outdoors, shared many memorable moments through river guiding, water adventures, and their appreciation for nature. The goal of the fundraiser is to accumulate $55,000 to alleviate the financial strain during this challenging period, allowing Lauren some time to mourn and start the healing process. By Friday, the campaign had already surpassed $35,000.
