A tragic road-rage incident on Highway 90 in Horry County has left one man dead and another facing murder charges, underscoring how quickly everyday traffic disputes can turn deadly. Authorities say the fatal shooting followed a chaotic multi-vehicle crash during the busy morning commute near Long Bay Road, shocking witnesses and forcing the highway to shut down for hours as investigators worked the scene.
According to law enforcement and witness accounts, the incident unfolded around 7:45 a.m. when a white pickup truck swerved to avoid another vehicle on Highway 90. The maneuver triggered a chain reaction, causing the pickup to collide with a Honda Civic and a third vehicle before careening into a ditch. What began as a traffic accident soon escalated into a heated confrontation.
Investigators say Paul Jones Greenwood, 33, of Nichols, got out of his pickup truck and became involved in a verbal argument with the driver of the Honda Civic. Tensions flared rapidly. Moments later, gunfire erupted. Bystander video, now part of the investigation, captured the horrifying sequence as multiple shots were fired during the confrontation. Greenwood was struck and later died from his injuries at the scene, according to Horry County Chief Deputy Coroner Tamara Willard.
Authorities have charged Elijaih Thurman Taylor, 23, of Nakina, North Carolina, with murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime. Investigators allege Taylor, who was driving the Honda Civic with North Carolina license plates, fired the fatal shots during the dispute. Witnesses, including Khadijah Hemingway and her mother Evettie—who were also involved in the crash—told police they saw Taylor standing nearby as he opened fire.
Taylor was taken into custody and is currently being held without bond at the J. Reuben Long Detention Center, according to Horry County officials. The stretch of Highway 90 near Star Bluff and Long Bay roads remained closed for several hours as detectives processed evidence, reviewed video footage, and reconstructed the events leading up to the shooting. The roadway eventually reopened by early afternoon.
As the investigation continues, Greenwood’s death has left a family and community grieving. A GoFundMe organized in his memory describes him as a loving father, son, brother, and friend who was deeply cherished by those around him. Greenwood is survived by his girlfriend, Brittany Johnson, and three children, who are now facing an unimaginable loss brought on by a moment of roadside violence.
Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting as a homicide, while urging drivers to de-escalate conflicts on the road. The case serves as a sobering reminder that road rage can have irreversible consequences, turning an ordinary drive into a life-altering tragedy for multiple families.
