 Jade Scott has demonstrated an impressive ability to keep secrets during her time on The Traitors. While millions tune in to observe her manage deceit and mistrust on the popular BBC One show, the PhD candidate has been silently carrying a profound personal loss that has influenced her life since childhood.

At 26, this contestant from the University of Warwick faced a devastating event in August 2018 when she lost her mother, Maggie Fung, along with her seven-year-old half-sister, in a murder-suicide case. This tragic occurrence took place at their residence in the Tai Kok Tsui district of Kowloon, Hong Kong, and left Scott heartbroken during her teenage years.

Emergency responders were dispatched to the apartment after concerns were raised by a domestic worker. Firefighters obliged to enter the dwelling discovered Ms. Fung, aged 44, and her young daughter unconscious together on a bed. Both individuals were declared dead at the scene. Authorities later located a suicide note within the apartment premises.

At that time, reports suggested that Ms. Fung had recently undergone a separation from her partner and might have been feeling overwhelmed by the emotional effects of the breakup. Employed at a medical clinic, she had made arrangements for her domestic worker to return home for a vacation since she and her child were anticipated to go abroad. When the worker unexpectedly returned early and was unable to make contact with Ms. Fung, worries began to surface. Paramedics later confirmed that the two likely lost their lives several days prior.

Scott publicly addressed her grief for the first time during Friday's episode of The Traitors, as host Claudia Winkleman held a dinner for the final eight competitors. When asked about her plans for the potential prize money, Scott revealed her personal story to her fellow contestants.

“I hope to purchase my own house,” she mentioned. “My parents divorced when I was seven years old. My mother returned to Hong Kong. She then had another child, and tragically in 2018, both of them were discovered deceased. Since that moment, I've had to significantly reconstruct my life, and I take pride in how far I’ve come. I just want a space that I can truly call my own.”

Scott further elaborated on how this unfortunate event altered her sense of self and impacted her interactions with others.

“I had a very close bond with her, so it was a significant shock,” she explained. “Our parents contribute to our own sense of identity. I had to go through a process of rebuilding myself. It takes time for me to let others into my life because I need that period to feel at ease. This may come off as distant initially.”

Scott is conducting her doctoral research focusing on women’s health and pregnancy while continuing to develop her own life and career in the aftermath of her loss. Additionally, she is in a relationship with Sam Brown Light, who operates a women-centric nutrition business called FEM. The couple often posts pictures together on social media.

Her parent, Stuart Scott, previously held the position of head of currency trading at HSBC. In 2016, he faced accusations in the United States of utilizing confidential information to gain financially from a multi-billion dollar currency transaction. He refuted the claims and, following an extensive legal dispute, was exonerated when U.S. authorities dismissed the case in August 2023.

In The Traitors, Scott continues as a Faithful participant but has encountered ongoing doubt from her fellow competitors. During the latest roundtable discussion, her name was brought up again, but it was ultimately Dr. Ellie Buckley, 33, who was eliminated from the game. Buckley shocked her co-contestants by disclosing in her farewell speech that she had joined the competition with her boyfriend, Ross Garshong, who had already been excluded.

In another part of the episode, player Jessie Roux was “murdered” by the Traitors, reducing the number of participants to eight.
