The East Point neighborhood is in mourning over the shocking and senseless death of Ina Chambers, a 55-year-old woman whose life was tragically ended by a drive-by shooting on Friday afternoon outside Gus Thornhill Funeral Home.
As reported by the East Point Police Department, the deadly shooting took place close to the junction of Gus Thornhill Jr. Drive and South Bayard Street while several families were at the funeral home for designated viewings. Ina Chambers stood by the entrance of the venue when suspects in a vehicle opened fire, creating an atmosphere of fear and shock in a location meant for sorrow and remembrance.
Chambers visited the funeral home to leave her daughter so she could participate in a viewing for a relative. When the shooting occurred, four different families were gathered inside or around the facility, honoring their departed loved ones. In an unimaginable occurrence, gunfire erupted and struck Chambers. The Fulton County Medical Examiner’s Office announced her death at the scene.
Another woman also sustained injuries during the incident. She experienced minor injuries that were not life-threatening and received treatment from emergency responders at the location.
East Point Police Chief Shawn Buchanan characterized the event as a “senseless act of violence,” offering his sympathies to the mourning families and assuring that investigators will relentlessly pursue those responsible to ensure justice is served.
“This is an outrage,” Buchanan stated. “Cowardly individuals opted to inflict such violence when families were at their most vulnerable moments.”
While police cordoned off the area with crime scene tape, investigators searched the neighborhood for clues as devastated loved ones gathered nearby, holding onto each other in shock. Witnesses and friends expressed that the emotional impact was intense, especially considering the venue—a funeral home where tranquility and honor are anticipated.
Friends recall Ina Chambers as a cornerstone of the southeast Atlanta community, significantly connected to South Atlanta High School, Fulton High School, and Walter F. Jones High School. She was recognized for her warmth, her involvement, and the many lives she influenced. Those who were familiar with her describe her as loving, generous, and dedicated to her family.
A close friend, Ken Lott, voiced his disbelief that such violence could occur in such an environment. He reflected on the sorrow of losing someone who was simply present to support her family during a period of sorrow.
Officials are actively looking into the shooting. There have been no suspects named, and the motive is still unclear, although witnesses noted a disturbance in the vicinity just prior to the gunfire.
