The Granville community and the larger area of Licking County are in deep sorrow over the untimely passing of Gene Church, a 56-year-old resident of Brownsville, who lost his life in a tragic pedestrian accident on Tuesday evening. His death has cast a heavy cloud of grief over his family, friends, and all those who are contemplating the delicate nature of existence and the need for kindness on our roads.
As reported by the Ohio State Highway Patrol, the event took place at approximately 6:10 p.m. on U.S. Route 40 close to the junction with State Route 668 in Granville. Gene Church stepped onto the highway from the north side when he was hit by a vehicle traveling west, a 2013 Buick LaCrosse operated by 52-year-old Mechelle Thompson from Heath. Following the first collision, Gene ended up in the westbound lanes, where sadly, he was struck again by another car that did not stop.
First responders arrived promptly, and Gene was taken to Genesis Hospital in Zanesville, where he was later declared deceased. Ms. Thompson did not sustain any injuries during the accident. The incident attracted help from various agencies, including the Ohio Department of Transportation, Licking Township Fire Department, and National Trails Fire Department, highlighting the gravity and sorrow surrounding the event. The accident is still under ongoing investigation as officials aim to uncover all factors involved and track down the vehicle that left the scene.
Gene Church will be remembered not for how he died but for the life he led and the space he held in the hearts of his acquaintances. Although words cannot alleviate the sadness of such a sudden loss, his legacy serves as a reminder of the importance of every individual life and the collective duty we share to care for each other—particularly on crowded roads.
During this time of mourning, thoughts and prayers are extended to Gene’s family and loved ones as they navigate this incredibly challenging period. May they draw strength from fond memories, find solace in the support of those around them, and gain peace from knowing that Gene's life had significant value. His memory will continue to endure in the hearts of many, ensuring he will not be forgotten.
