Danny Davis Death: Johnson City Community Grieves Loss of Beloved 57-Year-Old After Fatal Hit-and-Run

 Following the passing of Danny Davis, 57, whose life was taken along West Market Street, a community is grieving a terrible hit-and-run collision on Sunday night. According to officials, 32-year-old Kayla McCown has been detained in connection with the event, which took place in the absence of any known witnesses and without any first 911 calls.

Officers were notified around 7:30 p.m. following a passing Washington County Sheriff's Office deputy's observation of a person in the roadway who looked to have been hit and died by a car near the crossroads of West Market Street and South Center Street, according to the Johnson City Police Department (JCPD). The car engaged had already fled the scene by the moment law enforcement arrived.

Later, the victim was identified as Danny Davis by the Tennessee Highway Patrol (THP); he was declared dead at the site. Investigators found that Davis was hit by a 2023 Subaru Ascent driven by Kayla McCown while crossing West Market Street, albeit outside a designated crosswalk. Officials said that McCown was not hurt in the accident.

Investigators depended much on technology and agency collaboration as there were no witnesses and no emergency calls reporting the event. The JCPD reviewed traffic camera evidence capturing the accident and gave a vehicle involved description. The department's Flock Safety license plate reader system was loaded with that data; it correctly recognized a license plate connected to the suspect vehicle.

Officers with the THP and JCPD found and arrested McCown at about 9 p.m. within roughly 90 minutes of the first report. Among the charges filed by the THP were failing to offer help and give information, leaving the scene of an accident causing injury or death, and immediate reporting of an accident. Still under research.

Beyond the investigation and arrest is a painful bereavement. Danny Davis was someone dearly loved and known by those close to him, not merely a figure or name in a study. Family, friends, and the community are struggling with bereavement and unsolved questions following his unexpected death. One moment brought a life taken; memoirs, love, and an unfillable vacuum followed.
