Authorities are looking into a heartbreaking shooting incident in Dyer County that resulted in the death of one individual, left another severely hurt, and led to the suspected gunman being dead following a crash, which officials label as a probable murder-suicide.
As reported by the Dyer County Sheriff’s Office, officers arrived at a residence in the Lennox region early Tuesday morning and discovered a man with at least one gunshot injury. He was declared dead on the scene. A second individual, also with gunshot injuries, was taken to a local medical facility in critical condition.
Sheriff Jeff Box has named the suspect as 60-year-old Sherry Lydon. Investigators claim that Lydon fatally shot her spouse, William John Lydon Jr., while he was asleep, then shot her 24-year-old son before leaving the house. The son is currently in the hospital in critical condition.
After leaving the home, officials report that Lydon drove east in the westbound lanes of I-155 close to the Mid-South Dragway (Highway 181). Her car collided head-on with a large truck, which investigators suspect was an act of suicide. Lydon was taken to a medical facility, where she eventually passed away. The semi-truck driver was unharmed.
Investigators indicated that Lydon had recently had surgery and was allegedly facing mental health challenges, which they believe may have played a role in this incident.
“This is an extraordinarily tragic occurrence that has deeply impacted our community,” Sheriff Jeff Box stated. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the Lydon family in this challenging time, and we request your continued understanding as we proceed with this investigation.”
The inquiry is still active as authorities persist in collecting information regarding the catastrophic events.
