Wasatch Academy Incident: Seventeen Students Taken to Hospital, Two in Serious Condition, One Person Deceased in Multiple Bus Collision in Ephraim, Utah
The community of Wasatch Academy and its vicinity is in mourning due to a tragic incident that took place on Friday night in Ephraim, Utah, involving a pickup truck and two school buses.
The collision occurred at approximately 8:30 p.m. on U.S. Route 8 close to milepost 268, resulting in 17 students being hospitalized, two of whom are in critical condition, and the death of the pickup truck driver.
Families, educators, and local officials are dealing with the consequences of this unfortunate occurrence, and the community has united to provide support. As reported by Utah State Troopers, a man aged 43, who was driving a pickup truck headed south, swerved into oncoming traffic, hitting two school buses traveling north.
The first bus, which had 19 students aboard, was only clipped by the truck, and luckily, no injuries were reported among the students. However, the second bus was impacted head-on and was carrying 17 students as well as a driver.
Eighteen individuals from that bus were taken to a nearby hospital, suffering from various degrees of injury, and two were flown by helicopter in critical condition. The driver of the pickup truck unfortunately lost his life at the site of the incident. Authorities are looking into drowsy driving as a potential factor, although the investigation is still ongoing.
Officials from Wasatch Academy provided updates to parents and the wider community on Saturday morning. A parent revealed that an email from the school was sent out at 3 a.m., mentioning that both buses were operated by faculty members.
The communication also verified that 19 students and one staff member were sent to hospitals, and at that point, two students and one faculty member remained hospitalized, while the others were able to return to campus with minor injuries.
In addition, the school announced that finals for the week would be delayed and other activities rearranged to give the community time to come to terms with the distressing situation. Families and staff were encouraged to pray for those receiving medical care and for those grieving the loss of family members.
Support from local communities has been swift and substantial. Mt. Pleasant City expressed its solidarity with Wasatch Academy and those impacted via a message on Facebook.
