Video Shows Brown University Shooting Suspect Leaving Engineering Building as Manhunt Continues
Brown University shooting leaves two students dead and multiple injured as police search for suspect seen fleeing engineering building.
Authorities have confirmed that the deadly shooting at Brown University took place inside a first-floor classroom of the Barus and Holley Engineering Building, prompting an extensive manhunt as the suspect remains at large more than six hours after the attack.
According to investigators, 11 people were struck by gunfire, all believed to be students. Two victims were pronounced dead, while the remaining individuals were transported to area hospitals. Officials later confirmed that one additional victim sustained injuries from bullet fragments and is expected to make a full recovery.
Providence Police said the suspect fled the engineering building immediately after the shooting, exiting onto Hope Street before moving toward the Waterman Street area. Authorities stated that there is no interior surveillance footage capturing the suspect inside the Barus and Holley building, complicating efforts to trace his movements.
Investigators have also been unable to determine how the suspect initially entered the building or where he went after fleeing. Police described the suspect as a male, possibly in his 30s, dressed in black. Video evidence under review may show the suspect wearing a camouflage-style face covering, though that detail has not yet been fully confirmed.
The incident unfolded shortly after 4:20 p.m., when Brown University issued an emergency alert warning of an active shooter near the engineering building. Students, faculty, staff, and nearby residents were instructed to shelter in place, lock doors, silence mobile devices, and remain hidden. The alert reiterated standard emergency guidance, advising evacuation only if it could be done safely.
At approximately 5:27 p.m., the university issued a follow-up alert reporting additional shots fired near Governor Street, roughly two blocks from the original scene. Shortly afterward, Providence Police confirmed that multiple people had been shot in the surrounding campus area.
During an evening news conference, Providence Deputy Police Chief Tim O’Hara stated that investigators believe a firearm was used, though no weapon has been recovered and the exact type remains unknown. Police confirmed there was no direct interaction between officers and the suspect, who fled on foot before law enforcement arrived.
Authorities also addressed reports of a separate police confrontation involving gunfire several blocks away. Officials clarified that while early reports suggested a suspect had been detained, no confirmed connection has been established between that incident and the Brown University shooting.
Providence Mayor Brett Smiley confirmed that no suspect is currently in custody and emphasized that Brown University officials, Providence Police, and the FBI are working together to locate the individual responsible. The shelter-in-place order remains in effect, and authorities continue to urge the public to avoid the area.
