The Decatur community is experiencing deep sorrow due to the heartbreaking passing of Treb McKinnon, a seventh-grade student from McCarroll Middle School, who tragically died in a side-by-side ATV accident on Saturday afternoon. The incident took place at approximately 4:30 p.m. in the 300 block of County Road 3250, and also resulted in injuries to three additional young individuals.
Decatur ISD conveyed the heartbreaking news on Sunday, expressing their immense sadness and requesting that the community envelop the McKinnon family with support and prayers.
"We implore everyone to keep the McKinnons in their thoughts and prayers. Our school community is providing love and support to this family during this incredibly challenging period of grief," stated the district in an announcement.
Details of the Accident
As reported by Wise County EMS Chief Randall Preuninger, four young people were riding in the off-road side-by-side vehicle when it overturned. Emergency services from Wise County EMS (Rescue 1, Squad 1, Medic 1, and Medic 5), along with the Decatur Fire Department and the Wise County Fire Marshal’s Office, arrived at the scene.
McKinnon, along with two other juveniles, was taken to Medical City Decatur. One of the youths sustaining critical injuries was later airlifted to Cook Children’s Hospital in Fort Worth. The third individual suffered severe injuries and received care in Decatur. A fourth juvenile experienced minor injuries but did not need ambulance transportation.
Community Support and Resources
In light of this tragedy, First Baptist Church in Decatur will open its doors starting at 4 p.m. on Nov. 30, welcoming students, families, school personnel, and community members looking for a space to gather, mourn, and support each other. This gathering will take place at 1200 Preskitt Road, Building 100, Decatur, TX 76234.
Decatur ISD also announced that counselors will be available at McCarroll Middle School starting Monday, Dec. 1, to offer emotional assistance to students, families, and staff. Administrators are scheduled to convene Monday afternoon to prepare further resources and strategies to aid the school community during these challenging days ahead.
Superintendent Taylor Williams and Principal Brandi Shisler underscored the emotional toll that this loss will have on students returning after the Thanksgiving break:
"We understand that coming back to school on Monday morning will be difficult," they expressed in a joint statement. "We also recognize that people might experience a variety of feelings in response to the loss of a classmate and loved one. To better aid our families and staff in supporting students and one another, we have compiled various resources and suggestions."
