A fatal accident on Route 262 in Augusta County resulted in the death of a man from Texas on Monday afternoon and left another motorist with severe injuries, as reported by Virginia State Police. The incident occurred shortly after 3:20 p.m., causing major delays as emergency teams arrived at the location and officials began to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.
According to Virginia State Police, the accident took place at approximately 3:24 p.m. when a 2006 Mitsubishi Outlander, which was heading south on Route 262, abruptly left its designated lane. The vehicle was operated by 40-year-old Stephen Sean McMahon from Hays, Texas. The reasons for the vehicle's deviation into the opposite lane are still being examined while McMahon's car crossed the grassy divider that separates the two directions of travel and entered the lanes meant for northbound traffic.
After entering the northbound section, the Mitsubishi struck a 2024 Audi Q5 head-on. The Audi was driven by 73-year-old Alan J. Wallis, a resident of Craigsville. According to troopers, the collision was fierce, leading to significant damage to both cars and necessitating an urgent response from emergency services.
McMahon sustained fatal wounds and was declared dead at the scene of the accident. Investigators reported that he was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the incident, according to initial findings from the accident report. Wallis sustained serious injuries in the crash and was promptly taken by emergency personnel to Augusta Health for medical care.
