Tragedy struck on Thursday morning, Dec. 18, 2025, when former NASCAR driver Greg Biffle and his family were killed in a plane crash near Statesville, North Carolina. Biffle, 55, his wife Cristina Grossu Biffle, 35, their daughter Emma, 14, and son Ryder, 5, all perished when their Cessna C550 private jet crashed while attempting to land at Statesville Regional Airport.
The aircraft, owned by Biffle’s company GB Aviation Leasing, reportedly attempted to turn back to the airport before the crash. Local meteorologists and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) noted deteriorating weather conditions, including low clouds and light rain, which may have contributed to the tragedy. The crash occurred around 10:15 a.m., about 45 miles north of Charlotte, at an uncontrolled airport where pilots are required to self-report their positions.
Biffle, a celebrated 2002 NASCAR Busch Series champion and 2000 Craftsman Truck Series champion, was widely respected in the racing community for his skill on the track and his philanthropic efforts, including disaster relief initiatives after Hurricane Helene in 2024.
The crash was confirmed by Statesville Regional Airport on social media, noting the involvement of federal and local emergency crews. Cleetus McFarland, a close friend of the Biffle family, confirmed on social media that the family was en route to spend the day with him when the accident occurred.
Emergency personnel worked for hours to secure the crash site, which was engulfed in flames. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is leading the investigation, with the FAA providing support. Officials have not released additional details regarding the exact cause of the crash, though preliminary reports suggest possible mechanical issues compounded by weather conditions.
The NASCAR and motorsport communities have expressed their grief, highlighting Biffle’s legacy both on and off the track. Friends, family, and fans continue to mourn the loss of a driver whose impact extended far beyond racing, touching countless lives through his generosity and spirit.
