Marvin Morales Obituary News: Ex-Deputy Shot by CHP Following Escape from Location of Child's Homicide in Sacramento

A community in the Sacramento region is grappling with a tragic and alarming series of events that concluded on Tuesday with the death of 40-year-old Marvin Morales, who previously served as a deputy for the Sacramento County Sheriff's department. Morales was fatally shot by a California Highway Patrol officer after he fled the location where his 11-year-old child had been discovered with stab wounds. This sorrowful incident has left neighbors, family members, and officials shaken as investigations seek to clarify the unfolding events.

The situation began early on Tuesday morning when the Elk Grove police received an urgent call from a woman just after 8 a.m., expressing her fears for the safety of her two children who were left alone with their father. Officers quickly responded to the residence, where they encountered a shocking scene. An 11-year-old child had suffered stab wounds and was later declared deceased at a hospital, whereas a 6-year-old child was found in the house without any injuries. However, Morales was absent, leading to a comprehensive search throughout the area.

Shortly thereafter, authorities discovered a vehicle thought to belong to Morales heading south on Interstate 5. CHP officers attempted to pull over the vehicle, sparking a chase that progressed towards Stockton. As the pursuit continued, officers used spike strips south of Highway 12 to disable the vehicle. Morales crashed shortly after, bringing the chase to a sudden stop. What transpired next is still being investigated, but officials confirm that a CHP officer shot Morales fatally after the crash occurred

Authorities have not disclosed specifics regarding the circumstances surrounding the shooting, such as whether Morales was armed or what actions may have prompted the officer to take lethal action. The Elk Grove Police Department is currently overseeing the investigation, with officials suggesting that it may take some time for a comprehensive understanding to emerge. The lingering uncertainties have left many feeling uneasy, particularly in light of the violent and emotional aspects of this case.

This tragic event has also brought renewed focus to Morales’ troubled history. In 2023, a widely circulated video depicted Morales unconscious on the floor of a sheriff’s office bathroom after taking fentanyl from a suspect. Deputies were observed administering naloxone to revive him. Following this incident, an internal affairs investigation ensued, leading Morales to resign from the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office in 2024. The event has sparked discussions about stress, drug use, and the challenges encountered by law enforcement professionals.
