A law enforcement operation in Margate led to gunfire on Wednesday in the 6100 block of NW 2nd Street, resulting in injuries to a Broward Sheriff’s Office (BSO) deputy and the death of a suspect, according to officials.
BSO indicated that deputies along with members of Margate’s Burglary Apprehension Team were executing an operation in the region when they had an altercation with a suspect, which escalated to gunfire. One deputy was hit during the incident; however, authorities reported that the bullet struck the deputy’s ballistic vest, causing only minor injuries.
Emergency medical personnel assessed the deputy at the scene. BSO has stated that the deputy is anticipated to recover fully.
The suspect was hit when the deputies returned fire. Officials have verified that the individual was declared dead at the scene. The identity of the suspect has not been disclosed as authorities are waiting to inform the next of kin.
The event took place near Southgate Boulevard and U.S. 441, an area that was briefly shut down while investigators examined the location. A significant law enforcement presence lingered for several hours as detectives sought to clarify the events that led to the shooting.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) is likely to assume the investigation, which is the usual procedure for incidents involving police shootings in the state.
