A stretch of the M5 heading north encountered major delays on Thursday afternoon due to a heartbreaking event that led to an individual's death between Junction 9 (Tewkesbury) and Junction 8 (M50).

M5 Suicidal Event Fatality

Rescue teams were dispatched to the site after reports of a critical incident on the highway. Authorities later verified that an individual had passed away after taking their own life.

Lane Closure and Heavy Congestion

One of the four northbound lanes was shut down as police, emergency medical teams, and motorway staff responded to the location. This lane closure caused significant traffic jams, with vehicles queued for several miles while investigations and recovery efforts took place.

National Highways indicated that normal traffic flow was initially anticipated between 16:15 and 16:30, but a subsequent update suggested a later restoration to usual conditions between 17:00 and 17:15 on 4 December 2025.

Motorway Reopens as Investigations Continue

The affected lane slowly reopened after officers finished their initial investigations. Officials have not disclosed further details out of consideration for the deceased individual and their family.

Drivers were recommended to factor in extra time for their journeys throughout the afternoon, with numerous motorists facing slow traffic as the area was cleared safely.
