A part of the M5 heading north faced considerable disturbances on Thursday afternoon following a heartbreaking event that led to a person’s death between Junction 9 (Tewkesbury) and Junction 8 (M50).
Emergency personnel arrived after receiving alerts about a severe incident on the highway. Law enforcement later verified that an individual had passed away due to self-inflicted harm.
Lane Closure and Heavy Congestion
One of the four northbound lanes was blocked as police, emergency medical teams, and motorway officials responded to the situation. This closure caused significant traffic jams, with vehicles being halted for many miles while investigations and recovery efforts were conducted.
As per National Highways, it was initially anticipated that standard traffic patterns would resume between 16:15 and 16:30, but a subsequent update suggested that a complete return to normal conditions would likely occur between 17:00 and 17:15 on 4 December 2025.
Motorway Reopens as Investigations Continue
The blocked lane was progressively reopened as soon as law enforcement finished their initial examinations. Officials have withheld further information out of consideration for the deceased and their loved ones.
Drivers were warned to expect longer travel times throughout the afternoon, and numerous motorists encountered sluggish traffic as the scene was cleared safely.
