The Bridgeton community is mourning the death of Linda Williams, aged 67, who died on Wednesday evening after being hit by a vehicle while she was crossing U.S. Highway 17.
The North Carolina State Highway Patrol reported that officers were dispatched at 8:44 p.m. to the junction of Fisher Street and U.S. 17, close to the Hardee’s restaurant, after receiving notifications about a pedestrian being struck by a car. Initial findings suggest that Williams was in the process of crossing the southbound traffic lanes when a white pickup truck towing a trailer struck her. Investigators noted that the driver tried to avoid hitting her but could not succeed.
Linda Williams was taken to CarolinaEast Medical Center in New Bern, where she unfortunately succumbed to her injuries. Officials have stated that there is no suspicion of alcohol or drug involvement on the driver's part, and there are no anticipated charges as of now.
