The municipality of Spur is grieving the passing of longtime staff member Joe Gutierrez, who tragically lost his life in a work-related accident on Wednesday afternoon within the city's boundaries.

City representatives reported that the event took place just before 2:00 p.m. at the crossroads of Carroll Avenue and 5th Street. Officials stated that Mr. Gutierrez, who worked for the City of Spur in public works, was engaged in a utility trench project when a collapse happened. Emergency personnel were sent to the site immediately, but sadly, the situation was confirmed as a fatality.

At the scene, volunteer firefighters, Dickens EMS, and personnel from the Dickens County Sheriff’s Office provided assistance. Despite their swift actions, Mr. Gutierrez could not be rescued. He was declared deceased at the location.

Officials from the city and county expressed their sorrow in light of the unfortunate news. Mayor John Schmidt of Spur and Judge Kevin Brendle from Dickens County both shared messages of condolence, offering their thoughts and prayers to the family of Gutierrez and to city employees impacted by this loss.
