 Hayes Hitchens, the visionary founder and enduring president and CEO of Moondance Adventures, is being commemorated as a leader, mentor, and unwavering supporter of youth following his death. Hailing from Nashville, Tennessee, Hitchens dedicated his life to crafting significant outdoor experiences that have influenced countless teenagers through adventure, service, and meaningful connections.

Established by Hitchens in 1996, Moondance Adventures is a teen adventure travel initiative that organizes excursions to some of the world's most extraordinary locations. What started as a means to convey his own passion for the outdoors evolved into a globally esteemed organization grounded in personal development, exploration, and living intensely in the here and now.

“With sorrow, we announce the passing of our founder and CEO, Hayes Hitchens,” Moondance Adventures stated. “His principles, kindness, and faith in young people formed the foundation of Moondance from its inception and fostered a community centered on adventure and connection.” The organization noted that Hitchens’ legacy will endure through the bonds, memories, and lives he impacted, and that his vision will persist in guiding Moondance trips this summer and thereafter.

Hitchens’ love for outdoor education began early at Camp Deerhorn in Rhinelander, Wisconsin, a camp established by his grandfather, Dr. Don Hitchens, in 1930. Camp Deerhorn characterized Hitchens as “a force of nature” whose influence was significant within the Deerhorn family. Throughout the years, he served various roles including camper, counselor, Voyager leader, campfire performer, and horseback riding instructor, leaving a profound and enduring influence on the camp community.

Hitchens graduated from Charlotte Country Day School and the University of Alabama. He also spent twelve years at The Lovett School in Atlanta, where he held the positions of Dean of Students and Director of Summer Programs. His involvement in youth development spanned over four decades and included contributions to the National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS) and the North Carolina Outward Bound School (NCOBS).

Through Moondance, Hitchens personally participated in trips every summer when feasible and frequently accompanied students on demanding expeditions. He successfully summited Mount Rainier, the Grand Teton, and Mount Kilimanjaro alongside Moondance groups, showcasing his belief that shared challenges foster character and community.

Julie’s Dream, a nonprofit aimed at broadening access to outdoor adventure, also paid tribute to Hitchens, emphasizing his dedication to equity in adventure travel. “Hayes was more than just a visionary leader in youth adventure travel; he was an advocate for young people everywhere,” the organization stated, acknowledging his generosity, leadership, and commitment to enabling youths from diverse backgrounds to engage in transformative outdoor experiences.

Hitchens resided in Nashville, Tennessee, where Moondance Adventures is based. He is survived by his wife, Michael, and their daughter, Hunter, who completed her seventh Moondance trip in 2023. The family will share service details when they become available.
