Capital Auto Group has conveyed, with deep sorrow, the news of its President and Founder, Frank Howard, passing on December 4, surrounded by his family after a brave fight against cancer.

For over fifty years, Frank Howard was a pivotal figure in the business landscape of Newfoundland and Labrador, with a particular focus on the automotive industry. Starting from humble beginnings with a single dealership, he transformed his ambitions into Capital Auto Group, now a flourishing entity representing ten automotive brands and providing jobs for over 500 individuals. His entrepreneurial success also encompassed The Howard Group, which manages a significant real estate portfolio through Howard Properties.

Frank’s leadership approach, characterized by integrity, determination, and a steadfast pursuit of excellence, garnered him extensive admiration and multiple awards. Notably, he received the esteemed CADA Laureate Award for Ambassadorship and was recently inducted into the Junior Achievement Newfoundland and Labrador (JANL) Business Hall of Fame, highlighting his significant impact on the region’s economic and commercial growth.

However, those close to Frank believe that his most significant legacy may extend beyond the business realm. Grounded in his community, he maintained that real success is not solely defined by career achievements but by the capacity to contribute positively to society. His charitable contributions benefited numerous organizations, including the Health Care Foundation, Daffodil Place, Janeway Children’s Hospital, Ronald McDonald House, and The Gathering Place, among many others. Through decades of kindness, he bolstered essential services and support systems across Newfoundland and Labrador, leaving behind a compassionate legacy that will continue to aid families for years ahead.

At the heart of Frank Howard’s life was his family. He enjoyed a devoted marriage with his cherished wife, Annette, and derived immense happiness from his children—Jon (Kristy), Jordan, Mike (Maria), and Nick (Sukriti)—as well as his grandchildren: Logan, Madden, Molly, and Roman. His greatest joys were found in their shared moments, and his devotion to his family shaped both his personal and professional journeys.

The Howard family has expressed sincere gratitude to their relatives, friends, and the medical teams at the Health Sciences Centre and The Ottawa Hospital for their kindness and support throughout Frank’s illness.

Following Frank’s wishes, there will be no viewing or formal funeral service. Instead, a memorial celebration will be planned soon to honor his extraordinary legacy.
