A significant traffic accident in Sumter County resulted in the death of one individual and left another in need of medical treatment, as reported by officials. The incident occurred on the evening of Saturday, November 29, on Alabama Highway 28 and involved two vehicles moving in opposing directions. The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) is conducting an inquiry to ascertain the reasons behind this fatal event.
Authorities have identified the deceased as 68-year-old Ellis Bibbs from Livingston. Initial information from ALEA indicates that Bibbs was operating a pickup truck that collided with an SUV on the highway. The force of the crash caused Bibbs’ truck to lose control and hit a tree not far from the road. Investigators are continuing to piece together the timeline of events leading up to the collision and the contributing factors that may have played a role in the incident.
Emergency responders arrived swiftly after being alerted about the crash around 5:30 p.m. Medical teams evaluated both injured parties at the accident scene before taking them to Baptist Anderson Regional Medical Center situated in Mississippi. Bibbs sustained critical injuries and was declared dead upon arrival at the hospital. The driver of the SUV was also transported to this medical facility for care. Further information regarding the condition of the surviving driver has not been disclosed by authorities.
The collision occurred nearly three miles east of Livingston, on a portion of Highway 28 that is commonly used by locals and travelers. While officials have not provided insights about the weather or road conditions at the time of the accident, it was noted that the crash took place just as evening was setting in and daylight was diminishing. Traffic on the highway was briefly impeded while emergency crews worked to clear the area, remove debris, and ensure that both vehicles were taken away for further investigation. The road has since been reopened for travel.
The investigation is being managed by ALEA’s Highway Patrol Division. Troopers will examine physical evidence, assess the damage to the vehicles, and take note of the roadway conditions to gain a clearer understanding of the factors that led to the crash. Interviews with possible witnesses might also be part of the process. Investigators are emphasizing that it is premature to conclude whether factors such as driver actions, environmental circumstances, or unforeseen road hazards contributed to the incident. No charges or citations have been issued so far.
