Devastating Murder-Suicide Stuns Employees at Los Angeles' DWP Reclamation Facility in Atwater Village

LOS ANGELES – A serene Tuesday morning at the reclamation facility of the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power on Colorado Boulevard took a tragic turn when two men were discovered fatally shot, suggesting a murder-suicide situation.

Officers from the LAPD were summoned to the facility located at 4600 Colorado Boulevard shortly before 6 a.m. after a worker found a man lying on the ground with a gunshot wound adjacent to one of the maintenance structures. Upon their arrival, law enforcement officials found a second victim in the vicinity; both were declared dead at the site.

Although the police have yet to disclose the names of the victims pending notification of their families, sources knowledgeable about the case report that both were contract employees who had worked at the facility for several months. No motive has been made public, but investigators are looking into the possibility that a conflict at work may have escalated to deadly consequences.

“It’s heartbreaking,” expressed a longtime DWP employee who requested anonymity. “You come in before dawn, expecting a typical day ensuring the safety of the city’s water supply, and then you encounter something like this.”

The facility, an essential component of Los Angeles' system for recycling wastewater, was temporarily secured while detectives and the FORCE unit of the department examined the scene. Activities resumed by early afternoon, though trauma counselors were made available for employees.

The Robbery-Homicide Division of the LAPD is now handling the investigation. Those with any information are encouraged to call 1-877-LAPD-24-7.

The reclamation facility is located in the center of Atwater Village, enveloped by residential areas and small businesses. Local residents reported nothing out of the ordinary during the night, only becoming aware of the incident when news helicopters started flying overhead at dawn.

As the inquiry proceeds, colleagues are left to contend with the stark reminder that violence can emerge in the most unforeseen circumstances.

Further information will be shared as it becomes accessible.
