Damien Miller was a cherished coach, unwavering volunteer, and an essential part of the Mordialloc Braeside Junior Football Club (Mordi-Brae). His unexpected death has created a deep sense of sorrow that reaches well beyond the football pitch.
A committed husband to Jane and a loving, proud father to Isobel, Angus, and Lachlan, Damien’s life was characterized by his generosity, compassion, and a contagious optimism that uplifted everyone lucky enough to cross his path.
The Miller family became a part of the Mordi-Brae community in 2022 when Isobel started her journey in football. The following year, Angus and Lachlan followed her lead, and from that time onward, the family was woven into the very essence of the club.
Damien and Jane were not merely spectators at games or training; they fully engaged in the club’s life. Whether it was coaching, managing, training, or offering help wherever necessary, they were consistently the first to volunteer, frequently assisting multiple teams simultaneously.
Their dedication was not about seeking acknowledgment; it stemmed from a sincere concern for the children, the sport, and the community that encompassed it. Damien’s coaching path mirrored the principles he valued.
From 2023 through 2024, he took on the role of Assistant Coach for Isobel’s team, bringing motivation, patience, and joy to every practice and game. In 2025, he advanced to Head Coach, a season that would solidify his enduring legacy at Mordi-Brae.
Damien was passionate about fostering a setting where enjoyment, confidence, and personal development were prioritized. He recognized potential in every player and ensured they felt it as well, lovingly calling the girls his “Superstars.”
This philosophy culminated in a memorable way that many will treasure forever. With Damien at the helm, the team celebrated an incredible Premiership win in 2025, turning around a previous significant loss into a moment of collective victory.
The pride, excitement, and sheer joy on Damien’s face as he celebrated with the girls is a memory that will remain etched in the hearts of players, parents, and fellow coaches. This was more than a mere victory on the scoreboard—it was a reflection of the confidence, teamwork, and affection he cultivated within the team.
Outside of football, Damien was simply an exceptional person. His kindness, humor, and genuine concern for others brought smiles to faces just by his presence.
Together with Jane—whose invaluable efforts as a team manager and trainer complemented his own—the Miller family truly represented the essence of community sports: selflessness, connection, and heart.
