OKLAHOMA CITY, OK — The Oklahoma City community is mourning the heartbreaking loss of 6-year-old Adrian Salgado, a first-grader who tragically died after being struck by a school bus Wednesday afternoon near Fillmore Elementary School.
The accident occurred around 3:15 p.m. near the intersection of Southwest 51st Street and South Douglas Avenue, just a block from the school. Police reported that Adrian was walking home with two friends when the school bus, traveling east and stopped at a stop sign before turning south, struck him. While his friends paused at the corner, Adrian darted across the street and was hit by the bus’s side, then tragically run over by the rear wheels. He was rushed to OU Health, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
Oklahoma City Public Schools expressed devastation over the loss, calling the district “heartbroken.” Additional counselors have been made available at Fillmore Elementary to support students and staff. The district praised first responders for their quick actions and pledged full cooperation with the ongoing police investigation, which has not yet determined fault or issued citations.
In response to the tragedy, a GoFundMe campaign organized by Yadira Fraire on behalf of Adrian’s mother, Jennifer Salgado, has raised nearly $25,000 to cover funeral and memorial expenses. As of Friday, the campaign had collected $14,988, with donors moved by the family’s “unimaginable loss.” Community members have also held vigils, leaving flowers, candles, and notes near the accident site to honor Adrian’s memory.
Funeral services for Adrian, affectionately called Papito by his family, are scheduled for December 7 and 8 at Resthaven Funeral Home in Oklahoma City. Friends, neighbors, and community members continue to rally around the Salgado family, offering support during this devastating time.
