The Lakewood community is grieving the heartbreaking loss of 19-year-old Angeles “Angie” Nieto Gonzalez, who died Friday after being struck by a school bus at one of the town’s most dangerous intersections. Family members confirmed the tragedy, describing Angie as a loving, joyful, and ambitious young woman whose life ended far too soon.
According to the Lakewood Police Department, the fatal collision occurred along West County Line Road near Hope Chapel Road, a stretch residents repeatedly describe as “chaotic” and “accident-prone.” Police reports state that Angie was riding her scooter in the opposite direction of traffic when she was hit by the school bus. She suffered a severe head injury and was rushed to Jersey Shore University Medical Center, where she passed away days later despite urgent medical intervention.
Authorities also confirmed that the bus driver, who was traveling from Lakewood at the time of the crash, has been cleared of all charges. Investigators noted that Angie was not wearing a helmet, a factor that may have contributed to the severity of her injuries.
Neighbors and longtime residents say the tragedy reflects ongoing safety concerns at the intersection. The area lacks sidewalks, has narrow shoulders, and sees heavy daily traffic from cars, school buses, scooters, and e-bikes.
Witness Betty Salvatore, who saw the aftermath, described a scene filled with flashing lights and distressed neighbors gathering along the busy roadway. “It’s a dangerous area. There are a lot of accidents there,” she told News 12 New Jersey. “Angie was my eldest daughter… my first love, my greatest pride. I loved her with all my heart and I will miss her in a way that words cannot describe. I don’t know what life will be like from now on without her, but I do know her absence will be felt forever. Her memory will live on in everyone who had the joy of knowing her.”
