Benjamin Erickson Providence, Rhode Island Gunfire: Continuing Inquiry After Fatal Shooting at Brown University

 Providence and the Brown University community are still reeling as investigators carry out a thorough inquiry into a campus shooting that resulted in the deaths of two individuals and injuries to several others. This unfortunate event, which happened during a hectic exam period, has garnered nationwide attention and triggered a robust response from various law enforcement agencies.

According to several law enforcement officials familiar with the investigation, authorities have apprehended a person of interest in relation to the shooting. This person has been identified as Benjamin Erickson, a 24-year-old originally from Wisconsin. Officials emphasize that Erickson is regarded solely as a person of interest, and no formal charges have been brought against him at this moment.

Law enforcement representatives indicated that Erickson was taken into custody during a predawn operation at a hotel situated in Coventry, Rhode Island, which is around 15 miles to the southwest of Brown University’s campus. This operation was the result of a coordinated effort involving local, state, and federal entities after investigators pinpointed the individual’s whereabouts using geolocation information from his cellphone.

FBI Director Kash Patel confirmed that the FBI's Cellular Analysis Survey Team played a vital role in pinpointing the person of interest. In a public statement, Patel remarked:

“Consequently, early this morning, the FBI Boston’s Safe Streets Task Force, with support from the U.S. Marshals Service and the Coventry Police Department, took a person of interest into custody in a hotel room in Coventry, Rhode Island, based on intelligence from the Providence Police Department.”

Sources acquainted with the operation reported that officers knocked on the door of the hotel room and instructed the individual to open it. Upon entering, investigators interrogated him about his activities during the shooting’s day and night. He reportedly stated that he had remained at the hotel during that period.

During a search of the hotel room, authorities purportedly found two firearms:

A revolver, and

A compact Glock handgun fitted with a laser sight.

Numerous federal law enforcement sources stated that investigators suspect the individual traveled from Wisconsin to Rhode Island in the lead-up to the shooting, although officials have not publicly verified a motive or timeline.

At a press conference, Providence Police Chief Col. Oscar Perez recognized the extensive collaboration among agencies but chose not to divulge additional information, citing the ongoing nature of the investigation.

“We have deployed both local and national assets to examine and reconstruct the scene of the shooting,” Patel stated. “The FBI will maintain a comprehensive, around-the-clock effort until justice is fully achieved.”

Details of the Shooting

Authorities have confirmed that the shooting took place inside the Barus and Holley Engineering Building at Brown University, specifically within a classroom on the first floor. According to sources, the classroom was utilized by Rachel Friedberg, a Faculty Associate within Brown’s Program in Judaic Studies, who had previously instructed at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.

University and law enforcement representatives indicated that the attack occurred while exams were in progress, making the incident particularly distressing for the students and faculty who were present at the time.
