August Bargreen's Obituary, Reason for Death: UCSD Student Took His Life Several Months After His Girlfriend Died in an Accident

 The UC San Diego community is mourning the death of August Bargreen, a distinguished international business student who tragically passed away over the previous weekend. University authorities have stated that his passing is currently regarded as a suspected suicide, and resources for support have been made accessible to students affected by this news.

Bargreen, who was also pursuing a finance minor, was widely acknowledged for his leadership skills, commitment to academics, and active involvement in campus activities. He held the position of president in his fraternity and was described by his fellow students as friendly, driven, and exceptionally supportive of others. His friends and classmates remembered him as a cherished son, sibling, and friend whose influence left a profound impression on those who interacted with him.

His death follows closely after the passing of his girlfriend, Sonja Strom, a UCSD student studying chemical engineering from Castle Rock, Colorado, who died in September. Strom’s death had a significant emotional impact on the university community, particularly among the Alpha Phi sorority, where she played a key role as Vice President of New Member Education & Member Experience.

In a statement after her passing, the chapter characterized Strom as a person who embodied positivity and worked diligently to foster a sense of community. She was recognized for her outstanding academic performance, leadership qualities, and her ability to inspire others. Her peers reminisced about her generosity, commitment, and the lasting connections she formed within her community.

Strom, hailing from Castle Rock, was celebrated as an energetic young woman whose active participation in academic pursuits, sports, volunteer activities, and local organizations made her an integral member of the community where she grew up. She approached her education and personal projects with enthusiasm, effectively balancing her responsibilities with creativity and happiness.

Her family organized a celebration of life on September 15 to honor her passion for family, her adventurous nature, and the positive impact she had on those around her. She is survived by her parents, Peter and Christine, her sister Annika, as well as other family members who continue to cherish her memory.

In light of the loss of both students, UC San Diego has encouraged the campus community to utilize available support services. Counseling services and crisis-response teams are helping students, staff, and faculty who are navigating their grief.

University officials extended their condolences and highlighted the significance of support and connection during these challenging times.
