Stacy Community Mourning Following Devastating Confrontation That Results in Death of Local Individual Timothy Glenn Gaskill Jr.

STACY, NC — The tight-knit coastal town of Stacy in Carteret County is in mourning following the death of Timothy Glenn Gaskill Jr., who lost his life on Monday evening after an intense standoff with law enforcement along U.S. Highway 70. What started as a mental health crisis sadly turned into a deadly encounter, leaving the community in sorrow and advocating for a renewed commitment to compassion and effective crisis management.

The Carteret County Sheriff’s Office reported that deputies were sent out around 5:30 p.m. on November 3 after they received alerts about a man damaging property and trespassing at a house located at 1235 Highway 70. The individual was later recognized as Gaskill, who lived at 1215 Highway 70.

Upon their arrival, officials stated that Gaskill seemed agitated and was wielding two sai blades. He supposedly moved toward the officers before barricading himself within his home, resulting in a standoff that extended over several hours.

Around 8:45 p.m., the county's Special Response Team was called in. Despite efforts to negotiate and de-escalate the situation, the confrontation ultimately ended in gunfire. Medical responders provided assistance at the scene, but Gaskill was declared dead on-site.

The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) has assumed oversight of the situation as part of an independent inquiry, which is standard protocol when officers are involved in shootings. Further information regarding the events that transpired or the number of deputies present has not yet been disclosed by authorities.

For many residents in Stacy, the incident resonates on a personal level. Friends and neighbors recall Timothy Gaskill Jr. as a compassionate and generous individual who often assisted others discreetly, without seeking any acknowledgment. Although he faced mental health issues, they remember him for his friendly demeanor, sense of humor, and willingness to help those in need.

“He was more than just the events of that evening,” a longtime neighbor remarked. “He would fix your fence, share a joke, or check on you after a storm. That’s the Timothy we’ll cherish.”

In the days after his passing, community members have come together informally to reminisce, provide support to one another, and ponder how someone renowned for his kindness could meet such a tragic fate.

This incident has renewed conversations about crisis resolution and mental health care within law enforcement. Carteret County’s Sheriff’s Office has a Crisis Intervention Team trained to manage mental health emergencies, yet this case highlights the intricacies and significant risks of such interactions.

As the investigation by the SBI carries on, the community’s focus has shifted toward honoring Gaskill’s memory and reflecting on this loss. Residents express hope that Timothy’s story will inspire a movement toward greater compassion, improved mental health resources, and ongoing training for officers who engage with individuals in distress.

While the investigation may be lengthy, one fact is already evident to those who knew him: Timothy Glenn Gaskill Jr. will be remembered not for the tragic conclusion of his life, but for the kindness, joy, and quiet resilience that characterized his existence.
