Shanel Greer Akron, Ohio Homicide-Suicide: James Sanders, Recognized as Individual Who Took the Life of His Partner and His Own in a Family Tragedy

A heartbreaking incident at a residence in Akron has resulted in the deaths of two individuals, as law enforcement reports indicate that a man shot his girlfriend before taking his own life. The bodies were found late on Saturday night, Nov 21, in a house located at 1253 Dietz Avenue, where officers arrived in response to a call about gunshots.

Law enforcement sources revealed that 45-year-old Shanel Greer was found within the home with fatal injuries from gunfire. Close by, officers discovered an adult male named James Sanders, locally known as “Bubba James,” who also had visible injuries consistent with being shot. Both were declared dead at the location.

Preliminary investigations suggest that Greer and Sanders were involved in a romantic relationship at the time of the tragic event. Detectives suspect this situation to be a case of murder-suicide, with Sanders allegedly shooting Greer before taking his own life. The Summit County Medical Examiner’s Office is set to confirm the autopsy findings.

Residents nearby described the atmosphere as intense, as law enforcement, investigators, and emergency responders crowded the usually tranquil street. Detectives from the Akron Police Department’s Major Crimes Unit spent the day examining the home, collecting evidence, and talking to neighbors and possible witnesses.

Officials have indicated that there had been no previous incidents reported to the police involving the couple, although investigators are continuing to explore the relationship's history and any potential warning signs that may have led up to the deadly event.

This unfortunate situation contributes to the rising toll of domestic violence fatalities in Ohio this year, leading local leaders to renew their calls for enhanced support systems, intervention resources, and increased awareness around domestic violence issues.
