GRANITE FALLS, N.C. — A serene Sunday night turned disastrous in Caldwell County when 38-year-old Michelle Lynn Berry from Lenoir was struck and killed while she was walking along US 321. The North Carolina State Highway Patrol confirmed that the fatal incident happened on November 16, 2025, at around 6:35 p.m.
According to officials, Berry was walking on a dimly lit area of US 321 close to Glen Ridge Drive when she stepped into the southbound lane. She was hit by a 2021 GMC Sierra, operated by 34-year-old Issac Nathaniel Winkler from Granite Falls. Investigators noted that Berry was dressed in dark clothing, making her hard to see in the poor lighting conditions.
Rescue teams arrived quickly, but the collision had serious consequences. Unfortunately, Berry died at the location, leaving her family and the local community mourning her unexpected passing.
Winkler stayed at the scene and assisted law enforcement, and he did not sustain any injuries. After assessing the situation, officers indicated that there were no signs of impairment or speeding as contributing factors. So far, the evidence suggests that the Highway Patrol does not expect any charges to be filed.
US 321 experienced partial closure for nearly two hours as investigators worked to gather evidence from the scene, conduct interviews with witnesses, and reconstruct the timeline of events. The road was reopened after the area was cleared.
This incident has sparked renewed discussions within the community regarding pedestrian safety in areas with inadequate lighting, particularly in the early evening when visibility decreases rapidly. Authorities urge both drivers and pedestrians to be vigilant, wear reflective gear when walking after dark, and stay aware of their surroundings.
As the investigation proceeds, those close to Michelle Lynn Berry are left grieving a life taken too soon. The Highway Patrol has not provided further information but stated that the case remains under investigation until a conclusive review is completed.
