Locomotive Crashes into Leander ISD Bus Transporting Vandergrift High School Musicians in San Antonio
A heartbreaking incident took place on Monday afternoon in the northeast area of San Antonio when a bus from the Leander Independent School District carrying members of the Vandergrift High School marching band was hit by a train, prompting a large-scale emergency response from various agencies.
Preliminary reports from law enforcement indicate that the accident happened at a railroad crossing where the bus, returning from a weekend band contest, was struck by a train traveling on the tracks. Emergency personnel from the Schertz Police Department, San Antonio Fire Department, and Bexar County Sheriff’s Office quickly arrived at the scene to help the wounded and secure the area.
Although officials have yet to verify the overall number of injuries, multiple students and staff received evaluation from paramedics, with some being transported to local hospitals for further medical care. Officials have chosen to keep the identities and conditions of the individuals involved private until families are notified.
Leander ISD issued a statement conveying its profound concern for those impacted, assuring families that the district is working closely with investigators and offering emotional and logistical support to the school community.
“Our thoughts are with our Vandergrift High School students, staff, and families during this difficult time,” stated the district. “We are fully supporting first responders and ensuring our students receive the care and help they need.”
Initial reports indicate that the bus was in the process of crossing the tracks when the train approached. Investigators are currently examining whether the safety features at the crossing, such as warning signals or gates, were operational at the time of the collision.
This accident occurred just one day after another train-related incident in the same area, involving a large truck near FM 3009 and Lookout Road, which, despite being serious, did not result in any significant injuries.
Schertz Police stressed the vital need for vigilance at railroad crossings in light of these consecutive incidents.
“Trains can take over a mile to stop completely. We encourage drivers to be patient, remain alert, and refrain from trying to outrun a train,” a spokesperson for the department stated.
As investigations proceed, grief counselors and crisis response teams have been sent to Vandergrift High School to provide support for students, staff, and families dealing with the distressing event.
Authorities are anticipated to provide additional information, including the precise cause of the collision, as more details become available.
